Supporting a Teen During the Quarantine

The Pennsylvania Governor has just announced that schools are to remain closed for the rest of the year. For us, our local public school district, emergency online learning begins the middle of the week after Spring Break. While my teen has been keeping busy with her reading, drawing, and online gaming, she’s learning Krita, Photoshop, Blender, spreadsheets, cooking, and she is my gardening muscle (I have a manual cultivator tool).

Regarding the software tools, I have been assisting with most of them except for Krita. That turns out to be a great free painting tool that she’s introducing me to. Still on my list is to go over Illustrator with her, which I think she will enjoy as well.

My teenager continues German and Japanese with Duo Lingo, expanding her knowledge on equestrian (English) sports, practicing general bookkeeping for her part-time work, and doing a lot of reading. (She’s a fan of Manga and dystopian stories). I think both she and I miss her teachers (she has really cool teachers, and I volunteer here and there).

While I wouldn’t call what we’re doing homeschooling by any means, we’re taking advantage of a break from her schedule (sports year-round), challenging academics, and extracurriculars, we’re doing learning but based on her side interests that’s not sports nor school related. Let’s see what else we can squeeze in. In the meantime, her latest creation.
